It is mentioned in numerous ancient Chinese manuscripts that Southeast Asia is the homeland of the orange tree. The plant was transported from China to Syria and North Africa. In Europe the orange tree was brought from India in the 15th century. Today, orange trees are grown in all continents. Ancient healers recommended orange peel as prophylactic, to combat plague, rheumatism and poisoning. They aslo used orange peel to stimulate intestinal peristalsis, removal of harmful substances from the body, normalization of heart rate, respiration and blood pressure. Orange essential oil is obtained by cold pressing the peel of the fruit. The skins of the fruit are colored from orange to reddish and are of different thickness, hence the differences in the color and aroma of the oil. The essential oil is from pale yellow to dark red with a fresh orange aroma and sharp taste.
