For this reason, Roman students wore wreaths of mint twigs during class. Ancient Chinese healers used peppermint oil for gout and neuralgia, rubbing the diseased part of the body, which relieves pain. In Japan, peppermint oil was an ancient remedy for migraines.Peppermint essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the entire aboveground part of the Mentha Piperita plant.
